This is a brief biography of Paul Teres, eldest son of Wasyl and Paraska (Pauline) Teres.

My life began in Germany during turbulent times. Towards the end of World War 2, my parents were fleeing the Russian advance through their homeland, Ukraine. They travelled west through Poland and Germany reaching a farm near Lengerich, close to the Dutch border. My father had worked at this farm as a prisoner of war and had formed a friendship with the farmer and his wife. These kind folks sheltered my parents until my birth in Lengerich.

After the war, my parents and I spent three and a half years in a refugee camp before an offer was made to either migrate to Canada or Australia.

Luckily, Dad chose to come to Australia and left on his own in August 1948. Mum and I followed six months later, arriving in April 1949. After a short stay in Bonegilla, we were reunited with my father and settled in a rented room in Alphington.

My parents soon found work and I started school at Alphington Primary in 1950. Later in that year, I transferred to Fairfeld Primary and we moved into our first home in Naroon Road, Alphington. After primary school, I studied at Heidelberg High then went on to complete the Trained Primary Teachers Certificate in 1964 at Coburg Teachers College.

My first posting was at Turiff Primary School in the Mallee. During the next 33 years I taught in various mainstream and special education classrooms in country and city settings. I took a year’s leave without pay in 1982 to complete my Masters degree in Educational Studies and in 1989 worked in Denver, Colorado, USA as an exchange teacher. I resigned from teaching in 1998 and happily retired from the workforce.

I was married in 1970 to Barbara Braun and am the proud father of Lisa and Andrew from that marriage. Barbara and I divorced in 1980.

I have always had a great interest in sports but some are now too active for my participation. However, I still enjoy golf, cycling, walking, swimming, snow skiing and pool. My other interests include travel, movies, TV, music, cards, share trading, eating out, eating in, wine tasting and spending time with the family.

In 1992, I met the love of my life, Barbara Collins, at a singles club which, coincidentally, she had started (what an elaborate trap). We live in Maribyrnong, Melbourne and enjoy spending time together. Barb has brought order into my life and she benefits from my vast expertise (although she’s rapidly catching up).

I have many wonderful memories from Life’s experiences and look forward to adding more over the next 40 or so years. One comes to mind immediately - the birth of my grandchildren, Joshua and Samuel, to Andrew and Sophie.

My father passed away peacefully on 6th May, 2006 and I was then able to arrange for my mother to relocate from Brisbane to the Ukrainian Elderly People’s Home in Delahey, Melbourne in September, 2006.

After 14 years together, I asked Barb to marry me on her 57th birthday in February 2006. We married on 27th August, 2006, at the Registry Office in the Old Treasury Buildings in Melbourne. Here is a picture of my family after the ceremony.

We went for a cruise on our honeymoon and visited a few ‘exotic, hidden treasures’ on the Pacific Sun.
