Bridget’s First Anniversary

Sunday 9th December at Fawkner Cemetery 3.00pm. Then back to Con’s for pizza.

Con Collins

Con Collins is the Ground Zero man for this website.

Con has some good days and some not so good days but is still getting out and about. He gave himself a fright recently when he went to visit Bridget’s grave at Fawkner. The site is in a ‘garden’ setting and a little creek runs along the area. Dad found himself in the bushes at the side of the creek, lost his footing and fell almost into the water - narrowly missing hitting his head on the rocks. He spent the next 20 minutes trying to pull himself back onto the bank as he no longer has a lot of strength in his legs. Con and Barbara have been going for a short walk on Wednesdays to help keep some strength in his legs.

He continues to have a lot of medical tests and he is very often told that he is actually doing quite well for his age – especially mentally. Must be those crossword puzzles he enjoys.

Graham Collins

(Graham Collins is the first and only son of Con Collins who is the Ground Zero man for this website. Graham Collins Family)

Wade’s 21st birthday

The Collins Kids sure know how to party! Wade had his 21st birthday party at his home in Wantirna. The hose quickly filled to capacity with relatives and lots of Wade’s friends. We all though Graham was very brave to open his home to such a large crowd. His Godmother, Judy, made him a poster of himself with a poem she had written for him – and a book for guests to sign. Graham produced a Wade DVD that played throughout the night showing pictures of Wade during his 21 years. Judy and Uncle Paul’s friend Sophie took over the kitchen, heating and distributing the hot finder food to all the hungry young guests. Other family members helped out with the food and at the bar. The speeches were amazing. There was standing room only so speechmakers had to stand on a chair to be seen and heard. Graham started by talking about how proud he is of Wade and this was no mean feat as his voice had almost gone. But he managed to make us all laugh as he talked about his second youngest child. Next, poor Wade was ‘roasted’ by a couple of friends and younger brother, Darcy. This caused quite a bit of laughter!!!! And Wade finally responded with a speech of his own. The night then moved into high gear partying with lots of dancing and music. It was a very enjoyable night.

See lots of pictures of Wade’s 21st and Tyson’s Grand Final celebrations on Graham’s Photobucket site: http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f311/gjcollins/

Elise’s holiday

On the 20th of September I went on school camp to the Gold Coast for a week. 2 days was travelling up and back on a bus and the other 4 days was spent at the four theme parks! I had such an awesome time with all my girlfriends, except the bus ride up there was a nightmare!! It was 26 hour bus ride and I slept for a total of an hour!! On the way home, I got 4 hours sleep, but because my legs are so long, the chairs were really uncomfortable so I slept in the aisle of the bus!!

I’ve never been such a crazy person that goes on all the scary rides but I guess I have changed as I went
on the five most thrilling rides at Dream World. They were the Giant Drop, Tower of Terror- 0 to top speed…160kph in 7 seconds, (photo of me below on the tower of terror)

Cyclone, Wipeout and The Claw. Although the Giant Drop was pretty high up it wasn’t the height that freaked me out, it was “when is this thing going to drop?” It felt like my friend and I were up there for ages!!

Then there was Sea world…it was mostly about animals but had a few rides there, but it wasn’t my favourite park! My favourite would have to be Movie World because there are all the cartoon characters there! I also went on the Superman ride and I screamed the whole way!!!! It was going so fast, it was in creditable! It goes from 0 to 100k/h in 2 seconds!!

There’s a picture below of me on it!! (All that wind, looks like I’m about to cry).

Okay about school, I’ve finished Year 11 and completed all my exams! I’ve just got a week of Year 12 orientation then I get 10.5 weeks off…which is great because I need a break from school!!

I worked at the races this year, selling food and drinks! It was good experience but we got a lot of drunks coming up to us at the end of the day! It was funny but annoying!!

Jessica’s article

Jessica has been published in The Age! She wrote a piece for this newsletter recently for the July/August edition. It was about her feelings as she performed in her last school play. She thought she would submit it to the Age and was delighted when it was accepted.

Read the article here

(If this is too hard to read, you can see the original article in Word here.)

Jessica has turned 18

She got a laptop from her mum and dad and some nice things to put her jewelry in from Elise. She will be having a small 18th birthday celebration for family an a few friends in early December.

Jess has bought the car she has been saving for such a long time. It’s a Hyundai Excel Sprint that was owned by a little old lady since new.  It’s in excellent condition and Jess is rapt!

Senior’s Week

Barb and Paul decided to see what Seniors Week had to offer this year. We attended the launch of Seniors Week and took part in the walk at the Docklands. We were surprised to find out that it was a very brisk, one hour walk. And we led the pack the whole way!!!!!! A few other senior couples tried to sneakily take the lead from us but we just sped up. We were quite puffed out when we find got to the finish.  The next day we went to the ACMI theatre at Federation Square and saw two movies back to back, “The Last King of Scotland”, and “Notes on a Scandal”. Both enjoyable movies – neither of us went to sleep. By the time we got home we were quite tired.

Barb and Con went on the Friday to a talk on the synchrotron at Monash Uni. It was a great talk by a biochemist. At the most simplistic level, the synchrotron is like a big torch, although 100 times brighter than the sun, that enables researchers to examine very small things with the result being new breakthroughs in medicine, industry and the scientific world. If you want to find out more about it, go to http://www.synchrotron.vic.gov.au

Barb and Paul’s Tasmanian holiday

Text Box: Did you know you can’t take any fruit into Tassie? We didn’t. As we entered the airport, a sniffer dog took an interest in my hand luggage. We thought it might have been my prescription medication but it was the 3 tangellos I had thrown into my hand luggage at the last moment. So I started my holiday with a hefty fine.

Here are we are standing outside the Cascade Brewery after an excellent tour and beer tasting. We had a terrific little holiday in pretty Hobart. We went on the Cadbury Factory too - which was a bit disappointing. They no longer give tastings during the short tour! We traveled everywhere on public transport and walked a lot.

The weather was overcast most of the time – but not cold.

Mr Cool?

What NOT to do on a date.

Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, 'surely I can't look that old. Well.. You'll love this one.

My name is Alice Smith and I was sitting in the waiting room for my first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his diploma, which bore his full name. Suddenly, I remembered a tall, handsome, dark-haired boy with the same name had been in my high school class some 40-odd years ago. Could he be the same guy that I had a secret crush on, way back then?

Upon seeing him, however, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding, gray-haired man with the deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate.

After he examined my teeth, I asked him if he had attended Morgan Park High School. "Yes. Yes, I did. I'm a mustang," he gleamed with pride.
"When did you graduate?" I asked.
He answered , "in 1965.
Why do you ask?"

"You were in my class!", I exclaimed.

He looked at me closely. Then, that ugly, old, bald, wrinkled, grey-haired, decrepit son-of-a-bitch asked, "what did you teach?"

Congratulations this month to ….

ü Wade on turning 21

üJessica on turning 18

üJessica on her first published article

üJessica on saving for and buying her first car

üMelanie and Mark on the safe arrival of Rory
