Con Collins

Con Collins is the Ground Zero man for this website.

Con had a skin cancer taken off his left ear some time ago and ended up with what looked like a ‘bite’ taken out of the top of his ear. He has recently seen a plastic surgeon who repaired the ear so the ’bite’ is gone and the ear looks normal again.

Veteran Affairs have provided Con with a new bed with controls for adjusting the bed to suit his needs eg raised a little so he is not sleeping flat. They also provided him with an armchair which can also be adjusted according to need.

He’s been to the pictures a few times with Barb and they are currently even on the scrabble games they have been playing.

All medical reports are positive and Con is maintaining his fitness regime of stretching and a little exercise as well.

Extended Family News

The Bill Collins Family

Bill Collins was the only brother of Con Collins. Kath is Bill’s wife. Go to Bill Collins page for more information on this family.

Aunty Kath writes, “Rebecca is home safe and sound after 6 months away with many stories to tell and photos galore!   Antoinette is so happy to have her big sister home with her.  Paul still doing well at golf and aiming to keep Eastern where it is and not shift out further!

Celebrated my 73rd (my how quickly the years are flying) on Sunday 25th with those who could manage at a place in Blackburn where we had coffee and cake.  I spent the 27th with Paul and his Father-in-law, Joe.  We attended Holy Mass, did some shopping and then went to Healesville where we had lunch at the hotel.  It was an enjoyable outing, and then home to receive many phone calls from my 12 sisters and brothers.  Michaela was unable to attend on either day as she has been very involved with the art show at Matthew’s school.   Diane has settled down in her new school.

The children are busy with studies, sports, and social events: Josh has decided to have a rest from year 12 and do some work with his Uncle and then resume studies next year.  Matt and Sarah have both been in a play in their schools, and Matt has another coming up where he will be tap-dancing!

Matthew turns 18 this month and Michael will celebrate the big 50 on July 1st and is the first grandchild in the Cummins Family.  Marg, Daniel and Luke are planning a celebration on 28th June at Narre Warren.     Next issue I will tell you about this and also the news of World Youth Day in Sydney which Rebecca, Matthew and Sarah will attend.   Michaela and Paul will also billet two young people during the Melbourne stay.”

The Gough Family

Mary Gough is the 3rd girl in the Con and Bridget Collins Family. She is married to Chris Gough. Go to Gough Family page.

The Gough report this month is from Alex, “I’m about to condense half a year of events into one email. Alex - a girl of few words! (yer right).
At the start of February me, mum, Jess and Cathy all went and treated ourselves to a night at the theatre. Yes, us hip, wild things went and saw Priscilla Queen of the Desert - the musical. It was a fabulous night filled with singing, dancing, beautiful costumes and ping-pong balls. Now Jess and I have a new thing where we can quote every funny line from the show, like 'That’s just what Australia needs - a c---  in a frock on a rock'. It would be a musical to recommend, and definitely one to c again.

I got a job. Yay. Yes Alex Gough, who vowed to become rich without having to lift a finger, has actually gone out and got herself a job. I am now an employee at a shop close to home. I’ve been working there since the end of November and will hopefully continue to work there until I get a better offer or I get fired.

I also got into raw rock eisteddfod at school which is like the rock eisteddfod but not as expensive. ur probably all thinking 'but Alex can’t dance' and u would be absolutely right. I can’t dance, I was chosen because I am capable of going nuts on stage. We have a cat mouse love story with fantastic choreography by a year 12 girl who was accepted into Top Acts last year, so u know its gonna be good. We are performing in August and we are all very excited.

I had my year 12 Ball in February. So totally awesome, I had a fabulous time. It was a night where I was different and actually dressed up like a girl. lol. iIhad my fake tan done a couple of days b4 and my make-up and hair done on the night. I was wearing a fabulous dress I got in Queensland and the most gorgeous shoes I’ve ever owned that make me look a at least 3 inches taller. We could take partners but I didn’t coz I didn’t want to have to sit there and entertain them the whole night and I wanted to enjoy myself with my friends. Everyone came to my house for pre-drinks and nibbles. Rick was our photographer.

We took a limo from my house, it was a silver stretch limo - woohoo. We were lucky enough to play our own CD, which I had made, so we were listening to girls just wanna have fun, love shack, eye of the tiger and many other fantastic songs - turned up really loud. When we got to the ball, held at Brighton International, there was a photographer there who took our photo and stuff and then there was time to mingle b4 we went inside and had dinner and stuff. After dinner the DJ played some music, it was house music which I wasn’t too impressed with but naturally I danced. lol. Then after dessert they started playing all the good music, 80's all the way, and we danced some more. So by the end of the night my feet were absolutely killing me, my voice was kinda croaky and I was exhausted but I had the best night. It will most definitely be one to remember.

From the 5th till the 7th of March I went on my year 12 retreat. The sessions were a little boring but we were given heaps of free time and the place we were staying was so beautiful. Our cabin/room was one of the biggest there and it had an upstairs and everything – it even had a cupboard under the stairs which we called our Harry Potter cupboard - much time was spent in this cupboard. The meals where pretty good and the fact that we were with friends made it even better. It was an awesome time away from school to reflect on the coming year. So much fun.

Max has a car. Yippee. Max bought himself a car late last year. It is a 1997 BMW 319is, black of course. Although black is very classy, it is also very hard to keep clean. He likes his car as it is reliable and good on fuel economy, and makes traveling to part time work in Port Melbourne much easier.

After 8 seasons of junior football Zac has finally played his 100th game. On 27th April he proudly led his team through the banner. The banner that took Mary hours to make and seconds for it to be destroyed. Unfortunately the team lost but Zac got two medals – one for 100th game and one for Lion of the Week.

On the 22nd May Mary and Rick climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge. They both found the climb easy and not scary at all. Rick was a little hesitant as he has a fear of heights, but because Mary gave him the climb as a birthday present, he could not say no.

On the 31st May I had my 18th birthday party – as many of you may know. The birthday celebration started at 7.30 and proceeded through the night with much success. I’m pretty sure that everyone danced at least once as there was much success with the Nut Bush getting people to boogie down. I share my birthday with two other friends – who were also there (Anna and Daniel). About 6 friends stayed and half my family. People finally started to go to sleep round 3.30ish so I’m gonna say that it was a successful party. I had a ball which was the main thing. We were even lucky enough to have Jess’s famous French Toast in the morning which was a bonus. We danced, we sang, we laughed, we talked. I drank legally and I woke with nothing worse than a bit of a croaky voice and a sore neck - all in all it was an awesome night. Can’t wait till my 21st (but I’m sure mum can).

Now that im 18 I have booked in for my license – I’m not going to tell u when it is but I will tell u when I get it (and u know I will lol). I’m more concerned about mid year exams at the moment but I’m sure they will be fine as well.

Barb and Paul’s Club Med holiday

We went for a 10 day holiday to Club Med, Lindeman Island, in April. What a fantastic time we had – NEARLY as good as a cruise. I’ve written a diary of our holiday which you can read here if you are interested in this type of all-inclusive holiday (airfares, transfers, all food, drink and activities!)

Here are some of my favourite pics but there are lots more in the diary.

Paul’s 250th blood donation

I started donating whole blood in 1966. It took 30 years to reach 100 donations because you can only visit every 3 months. Having changed to plasma donations, I am able to visit the Blood Bank every 2 weeks and spend an hour reading the paper. I always enjoy the party pies and coffee afterwards.                        It’s also a good opportunity to visit Crown Casino.

I believe this is a vital community service that most people can participate in and encourage all readers to get involved. THE BLOOD BANK NEEDS YOU.

Interesting

Do it yourself hearing test
One in five Australians suffers from hearing loss, a condition that worsens with age. By calling 1800 826 500 toll-free and following the voice prompts, you can do a simple hearing test at any time in the privacy of your own home to determine your hearing ability.

The test, by government agency Australian Hearing, takes about five minutes, and is available for people over 18 from a landline phone. You can conduct the test for each ear. It requires you to respond to sounds played over the phone.  If you can’t respond correctly, you may have a hearing loss. The results, however, are not definitive. Consult your doctor for a person-to-person hearing test if you are concerned about your hearing range.

Australian Hearing provides subsidised hearing care to children, most veterans and pensioner concession cardholders. It has centres in all States and Territories. To locate your nearest Australian Hearing Centre, visit http://www.hearing.com.au or call 131 797.

Interesting health facts

Brenton sent in a whole lot of interesting health facts for this newsletter. I thought he had turned into a health nut but Graham assures me that is not the case.

This link will tell you about the health benefits of foot massage, self shiatsu massage and various fruits – as well as some facts on blood types. And read this one entitled “Never Feel Sick Again”. Thanks Brenton.
